Do you find yourself feeling confused by people’s love of the bard and his influence on British culture? Then this ‘Introduction to Shakespeare’ workshop is for you!
On Saturday 10th February, Bradford Cathedral will be hosting an ‘Introduction to Shakespeare’ workshop that will help those to discover the love of the bard, and find out more about how the playwright has influenced British culture.
The workshop – which takes place from 2pm – 4pm in the Cathedral’s de Lacy Centre – will be hosted by a professional director, who will work on getting those attending engaged in the script through performing, where you’ll be able to try out scenes and discover how it feels to be one of the famous characters from the complete works!
Elizabeth Lancaster, from Actors Community Theatre, the group which performs a Shakespeare play in the grounds of the Cathedral each summer, says:
“There’s nothing like getting up and moving around to bring a scene to life; the language may be tricky, but the emotions and stories are universal and timeless. There is no ‘right’ way to play Shakespeare, so just dive in and see what happens!”
The Revd Canon Ned Lunn, Bradford Cathedral’s Canon for Intercultural Mission and the Arts, says:
“As part of our offer to the city in preparation for City of Culture 2025 we are committed to support and develop local artists. We believe that a strong and vibrant amateur arts scene is the best environment to foster new talent.
“This workshop aims to encourage people to engage with theatre in a safe and non-threatening way with the hope that we might discover and develop new performers and new audiences. The skills taught in this workshop will be about understanding the language and characters of Shakespeare as well as basic comedy skills as well.
“Some might ask why a cathedral is organising a theatre workshop. We believe that part of our role in Bradford is to ensure that all can discover who they were created to be and that no one is passed by. This workshop and our developing relationship with ACT and other community arts organisations is part of our commitment to the flourishing of Bradford and the individuals that make up the rich fabric of our city.”
