On Wednesday 4th September we welcome Gordon Stewart for the first recital of the 2024 autumn season. In this edition of ‘Notes from an Organist’ we discover more about them, and what to expect from their recital.

Could you introduce yourself, how you got into music / become an organist and your musical journey to where you are today? I was a son of the manse so heard the organ in church every week and when my legs were long enough the organist encouraged me to give it a go and I was hooked! I had played the piano from seven and took my first organist post at Dundee Methodist Church when I was 14.

What can people expect from your recital at Bradford Cathedral?
All the recitalists were asked to include some music from the Town Hall tradition so I am opening with a Concert Overture and an arrangement by Edwin Lemare. The rest of the programme is what the audience has come to expect from my concerts!

Why do you enjoy playing the organ?
Playing the organ has been part of my life for so long I can’t imagine not doing it. When I finally retire I’ll sit and play Bach for my own enjoyment

Do you have a particular favourite piece out of those you are playing?
The audience should never be able to tell!

You can join us on Wednesday 4th September at 1pm to hear Gordon’s organ recital, with an optional £4 buffet lunch beforehand at 12:30pm.

You can discover more about our organ recital season on our dedicated page.
