As I write, the Cathedral Close is awash with autumnal leaves. On the trees, they form an evolving crown as the leaves turn through shades of orange or yellow. On the ground, they form a lush carpet that the dogs love to play in, kicking up a trail of leaves in the air as they run. It is also a time of year when “lighting up time” comes earlier: the street lamps and cathedral flood lights are seen in action, lighting the way and illuminating our wonderful building. The year is drawing to a close and the spring and summer are now but a memory.
The Church’s Year is also drawing to a close. This is a time of looking back and remembering. In the coming weeks, there will be services to remember focus on Baby Loss, the Saints, and the Faithful Departed, and the war dead. This is a time to look back and to bring all of our mixed memories to the One who holds all things in the hollow of his hand (Isaiah 40.12). In the Gospel of John, after the feeding of a great crowd, Jesus instructs the disciples to gather together all the leftover pieces. “Let nothing be wasted”, he says (John 6.12).
In God’s economy, nothing is wasted. Our memories are precious to him. The psalmist says that he keeps our tears in a bottle (Psalm 58.8), and Jesus says that he will not leave us comfortless (John 14.18).
So, in this moment of looking back and remembering, we invite you to join us for worship, to offer your memories to God, and to receive the renewal of his presence and peace in your life. You will be most welcome.
