Irritable? Restless? Emotionally numb? Feeling isolated? These are some of the symptoms of over hurried lives. Whilst August might bring holidays, it might also bring children or grandchildren released from the end of the school year. Diaries may appear a little less frantic, but our lives can still be very much taken over with busyness.

One of the most helpful books for me over in the recent past was the, literally, life changing ‘The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry’ by John Mark Comer. It talks of how we might try intentionally to create a more unhurried life by looking at silence, simplicity, solitude and Sabbath. In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find details of services and events at the Cathedral where you might find opportunity to engage with one or more of these.

You may wish to reflect and engage with the various installations as part of our “Weaving Stories” season which continues throughout the month. You may choose to attend one of the concerts that you can find listed on our website. Or you might want simply to take time to sit in our grounds away from the noise of the city.

May I encourage you to find space this August for stillness and to hear God’s voice in the silence? Let this season be one of peace and renewal for you and your loved ones.

The Revd Duncan Milwain, Assistant Curate
